The rubric after the third collect in Vespers in the Liber Precum Publicarum, reads, ‘In Choris et Locis, ubi Cantores sint, hic sequitur Antiphona.’  The traditional ‘Antiphons’ after the Latin Offices are the Marian Antiphons that follow below in English.  I do not assert that the Elizabethan Prayer Book asserted that these particular forms should be used – even in Latin and even in the Queen’s hardly typical chapel.  These are, however, the traditional Office ‘Antiphona’!

SALVE REGINA

From Trinity Sunday until Advent

HAIL, holy Queen, Mother of mercy; hail our life, our sweetness, and our hope.  To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.  Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus.  O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R.  That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who by the co-operation of the Holy Ghost, didst prepare the body and soul of Mary, the glorious Virgin Mother, to be a dwelling-place meet for thy Son : grant that as we rejoice to keep her in remembrance; so by her devout intercession we may be delivered from the evils that now beset us, and from eternal death.  Through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.

ALMA REDEMPTORIS

From Advent until the feast of the Purification

Mother of Christ our Redeemer, O hear our entreaty,

Thou who art call’d the portal of heaven, the star of the ocean;

Still as we fall, we struggle to rise; then help us, we pray thee;

Nature in wonder stood when birth thou gavest thy Maker;

Thou who, Virgin before thou didst bear, and a Virgin for ever,

Heardest Gabriel’s greeting, look down with pity on sinners.

In Advent

V.  The Angel of the Lord brought  tidings unto Mary.

R.  And she conceived by the Holy Ghost.

Let us pray.

WE beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts; that as we have known the Incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ by the message of an Angel, so by his Cross and passion we may be brought unto the glory of his resurrection.  Through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.

ALMA REDEMPTORIS

From Advent until the feast of the Purification

Mother of Christ our Redeemer, O hear our entreaty,

Thou who art call’d the portal of heaven, the star of the ocean;

Still as we fall, we struggle to rise; then help us, we pray thee;

Nature in wonder stood when birth thou gavest thy Maker;

Thou who, Virgin before thou didst bear, and a Virgin for ever,

Heardest Gabriel’s greeting, look down with pity on sinners.

From Christmas to Purification

V. After child-bearing thou remaindst a pure Virgin.

R.  Mother of God, intercede for us.

Let us pray.

O GOD, who by the child-bearing of a pure Virgin hast bestowed upon all mankind the rewards of everlasting life : grant, we beseech thee; that we may know the succour of her intercession, through whom we have been found worthy to receive the Author of life, even Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord.  Amen.

AVE, REGINA COELORUM

From Purification until Wednesday in Holy Week

QUEEN of the heavens, we hail thee,

Hail thee, Lady of all the Angels;

Joy to thee, O Virgin glorious,

Beautiful beyond all other;

Hail, and farewell, O most gracious,

Intercede for us always to Jesus.

V.  Vouchsafe that I may praise thee, O holy Virgin.

R.  Give me strength against thine enemies.

Let us pray.

GRANT us, O merciful God, protection in our weakness: that we who celebrate the memory of the holy Mother of God may, through the aid of her intercession, rise again from our sins.  Through the same Christ our Lord.  Amen.
